Chapter 4, The Master's Command
He withdrew his gaze, "How did you come out? Did you not ask the mage to read your fortune?"
She murmured, "I have read 'The Collection of Lost Writings' and 'The Book of Natural History', but I have not finished them yet. I will take them back to Ye City later."
She was unable to attend to it, fearing that the master would become displeased again. Regretting in her heart, she thought that it would have been better if she had sent someone to convey the message earlier; how could she have forgotten! The master was intolerant of any grievances, and it seemed inevitable that she would face a scolding.
The woman said: "No! It is necessary to cleanse thoroughly, starting from today, to be reborn and become a new person"
In the hall outside, the parents are graciously welcoming the guests who have come to attend the ceremony, politely expressing their thanks and offering seats. A maid comes and goes at the door, occasionally lifting the door curtain. Directly across the threshold sits the master. He is dressed in a ceremonial robe of black gauze with red borders, occasionally sharing a light-hearted conversation with his aunt, looking particularly charming when his brows relax and his eyes brighten.
How clever she is, yet she finds herself facing the Master. This makes her even more hesitant to breathe freely, constantly suspecting that she has not done something right, feeling uncomfortable all over. Stealing a glance upward, she sees him sitting upright in the armchair, a warm smile unexpectedly gracing his lips. This leaves her puzzled, as he seems quite pleased. Upon reflection, considering that the Master has watched her grow over the past three years, his current feelings are likely similar to those of her parents!
The corners of his lips slightly lifted, "What is there to compare with others? I find it quite good, each has its own merits."
Madam Pei led Mi Rong to the incense monk to register and record their names, instructing the young servant to bring over twenty heavy strings of five-zhu coins for the novice monk to inspect, and then exchanged them for a jade tablet that had been consecrated. From that moment on, it was as if she had redeemed herself from the Buddha, allowing her to marry freely.
She felt an unbearable pain in her heart, yet she did not dare to show it on her face. Stealing a glance at him, he did not seem to be someone who spoke lightly. She bowed deeply, secretly shedding a thousand tears. There had still been hope, as she had thought that upon returning to Ye City, her senior brothers would take over, allowing her to live her life as carelessly as before. However, it now appeared that her well-laid plans had come to naught.
The green lamp recited a Buddhist chant and said with a smile: "Those who embrace non-action are free from all bindings. A noble person is one of great wisdom and does not require a poor monk to offer guidance." Having said this, he was unwilling to linger any longer and took his leave of the crowd. With a swirl of his apricot-yellow robe, he swiftly exited.
This left him at a loss, "It is merely a legend of the supernatural, naturally untrustworthy. How can a human marry a beast? Even if such a marriage were to occur, it would not produce offspring."
Since you have read "The Collection of Lost Writings," let me ask you the simplest question. "A learned person lives on even after death; an unlearned person, though alive, is merely a walking corpse." What does this mean?" He looked at her with great interest
She blushed and said, "If the Master says it looks good, then it must indeed be good." She slightly turned to the side and gestured, "Please, Master."
He was taken aback, seemingly quite adept at applying what he had learned. Having understood, he immediately put it to use. He cleared his throat and asked, "What books have you read since the New Year?"
It was just that he looked at her, his expressionless face instilling fear in her, "You arrived this early?"
The women of the Xie family entered the temple, bowed before the Buddha, and lit three sticks of incense to offer their prayers. Times have changed; luck has become even more important than before. They hope for the Buddha's blessings, wishing that if they can get through this year, everything will go smoothly thereafter
Everyone is laughing, "This brain is quite something, why don't you dare to speak nonsense in front of the Master?"
He turned and walked towards the Three-Eyed Bridge, catching a glimpse of Wu Xia, who was holding an umbrella, being replaced by Mi Yang. He walked a bit faster, causing her to stumble with her small steps. There was no choice but to slow down, accompanying the women as they shuffled along, moving at a leisurely pace.
In the eleventh month of the lunar calendar, "Master, I pay my respects to you"
The student accompanied the master through the hall. She said, adjusting the heavy crown on her head from time to time. Fearing it might provoke his displeasure, she first laughed at herself, saying, "I used to envy the beautiful appearance of the girls from the Fan family wearing it, but now that I wear it myself, it looks all askew and out of place."
"Strange, to swallow half and retain half." Madame Xie smiled and said, "It turns out that even those who cultivate fear losing their merits; they are not as good as those wandering monks who endure hardships to help others!"
He turned his back, his tall figure standing straight. The sky-blue lynx cloak contrasted with the pure white snow, embodying the dignified demeanor of a true gentleman.
Tan Sheng was apprehensive about her words being overheard by outsiders, and turned to Dao Sheng's maid to complain, "Why haven't you brought a handkerchief to silence your young lady? Such nonsense, if it were to spread, how could I possibly face others?"
She stuck out her tongue and said, "Indeed, I wouldn't dare even if I borrowed a cow's gallbladder. My husband is an exceptionally strict elder; if Sister Tan Sheng is to be matched with him, it must be done with great care and attention."
In a place devoid of mountains, one cannot speak of elegance. Yet, through the pine needles above, the distant twelve-sided pagoda stands impressively crafted. Each level is adorned with reliefs, though indistinct, likely depicting the story of the Buddha's nirvana. He sighed, for it was indeed cold, his breath forming clouds before him. Snow settled on his eyelashes, feeling rather burdensome. He raised his hand to adjust his collar, only to discover an oiled paper umbrella shielding him from above. Turning around, he saw Miyoi, her face bearing a self-satisfied expression, precise and meticulous, resembling a neatly written calligraphy piece. Turning around, he saw Miyoi, her face bearing a self-satisfied expression, precise and meticulous, resembling a neatly written calligraphy piece.
She spoke these words with great seriousness. He scrutinized her, taking in her large, bright eyes, delicate nose, and full, red lips. Her stunning beauty was complemented by a simple and earnest demeanor; this disciple was indeed a remarkable find, and would surely be able to assist him in the future
She listened and stepped back several paces on her own, "The student strictly obeys the teacher's orders"
The master's teachings are deeply engraved in the hearts of the students. Although she has her own opinions, unfortunately, it is not her place to voice any dissent. The master is very authoritative and has always been resolute in his decisions. Moreover, she is like lukewarm water; unless faced with a dire situation, she is too indifferent to contemplate such long-term matters.
The woman with an exposed face laughed beside her, and Tan Sheng felt increasingly embarrassed. She stammered an explanation: "It was all the adults' idea; I didn't say a word. It's fine for us sisters to joke privately, but let's not speak of it outside, or we might end up being laughed at!"
The Master has already risen, preparing to enter the Buddhist order, and has chosen the simplest of garments. He wears a moon-white collar and right-lapelled robe, devoid of gold embroidery or intricate silk brocade, made from the most ordinary linen. The collar and sleeve edges are adorned with black satin clouds, and a copper belt hook cinches his waist, while he dons a pair of deerskin boots. This attire is indeed very ordinary, yet on him, the mundane transforms into something extraordinary. The clouds come alive, exuding a unique elegance. This attire is indeed very ordinary, yet on him, the mundane transforms into something extraordinary. The clouds come alive, exuding a unique elegance.
The initial ceremony was completed, and all the guests stood up to offer their congratulations. She returned the courtesy and continued along the path she had come, back to the eastern room. Xuan Sheng took the plain dress from Tan Sheng's hands and followed her into the room, laughing as he helped her change. "Sister Tan Sheng's face is so red; it seems she is quite taken with His Highness, the Prince of Le Ling. Do you think there is a chance of inviting Auntie to act as a matchmaker while we have this opportunity?"
The next day, before dawn, Yuan Xiang came to wake her. Before entering the temple to offer incense, one must bathe, as a sign of respect for the deities, to avoid bringing impurities into the Buddhist realm. Confused, she was helped up by them, and her clothes were stripped off and stuffed into the bathing tub. After scrubbing, washing her hair, and cleansing her face, it took nearly half an hour to finish. By the time she emerged from the bath, it was already close to the hour of Chen, and she suddenly remembered that she had not yet gone to pay her respects to the master. In a flurry, she felt as if she were in a panic. There was no time to tidy herself up; she simply gathered her wet hair with a hairpin and rushed out. The wet nurse, anxious behind her, shouted, "With wet hair, you'll catch a cold and fall ill, wait..."
In her younger years, her long hair often covered most of her face. Now that it is tied up, it reveals the unique charm of a young girl. It seems somewhat casual, yet carries a hint of innocence. However, it is quite peculiar; her temperament is not slow, yet her speech is not fast, often leaving people with a sense of dullness. Such individuals possess this inherent advantage, as if they are untouched by scheming; even if they harbor some minor mischief behind others' backs, they are neither suspected nor blamed.
The honored guest has finished washing her hands and has turned around, facing away from the master, listening attentively to the guest's eloquent blessings. "On this auspicious day of the lunar month, you begin your coming of age. Abandon your youthful aspirations, and follow the path to virtue. May you enjoy longevity and happiness, and may you receive abundant blessings." The honored guest lifts her full head of black hair, smiling as she styles it for the ceremony. She raises her eyes and sees her mother gazing at her with tears in her eyes. Suddenly, her nose feels sour, and she finds it amusing. Adults are supposed to cry; when she eventually marries and becomes a wife, will she not cry rivers and seas of tears?
Murong Cheng was quite surprised, saying that it was indeed close to the truth, and it seemed that this monk had some skills. He then said: "I am currently facing a difficult problem and would like to ask the master for guidance to find a way out."
She said: "Why doesn't the Master call upon the students! Getting drenched in the rain can lead to illness, and being exposed to the snow, when it melts, is also harmful to the body!"
Lady Pei glanced at Murong Cheng, then at Mi Rong, and asked with a smile, "Your Highness, are you planning to go together?"
She listened to the eleventh bow and said, "Amitabha, I am determined to lay down the butcher's knife and become a Buddha on the spot. From now on, I bid farewell to the mundane world; do not persuade me, for it is of no use."
Once this step is completed, the hairpin ceremony can be considered concluded. Her mother had a specific set of admonitions for her, emphasizing the importance of speaking cautiously and acting prudently, as well as being filial and compliant. Her response was equally conventional, stating, "Though I am not clever, I dare not fail to comply!" With her heart filled with great joy, she performed a deep bow to her esteemed parents, marking the complete fulfillment of this ceremony
He turned his gaze and said coldly, "What? You don't seem very pleased, so I assume you are unwilling?"
Murong Cheng nodded, seemingly a bit melancholic, "In the future, you will be an adult, and I can no longer regard you as a child"
She shook her sleeve and said, "There are rules here; it is not only among classmates but also in front of unfamiliar men. Maintaining a composed demeanor and showing respect is the proper conduct of a refined young lady"
"What is going on this half a day?" The wet nurse complained incessantly, "There are no young ladies to serve in front of someone who is drunk. The young servant of His Highness the Prince of Le Ling does not even understand this little principle. How can he leave you all alone!"
Lady Pei was taken aback and repeatedly bowed in thanks. After exchanging polite refusals, she and the families of Xie Xun and Xie Zhao took their places in the high carriage one after another. Mi Rong, wrapped in a great cloak, stood to the side and was about to suggest that the master go first, but unexpectedly, Murong Cheng did not lower the curtain and glanced at her, saying: "Get in."
Tansheng, holding a handkerchief, was already teased by several sisters to the point of blushing. Daosheng was still laughing, "Yesterday, my second aunt told my mother that she complained about Auntie not giving a heads-up beforehand, just taking people to Zongsheng Temple to pray. If only she had hinted a little, at least she could have brought Tansheng along. It's always good for men and women to interact more. Besides, our Tansheng is not bad-looking!" She nudged Tansheng with her shoulder, "That prince's appearance is truly outstanding, sister, look! Tsk tsk, he is so well-proportioned; if he were to court a suitor, he couldn't be more perfect." Besides, our Tansheng is not bad-looking!" She nudged Tansheng with her shoulder, "That prince's appearance is truly outstanding, sister, look! Tsk tsk, he is so well-proportioned; if he were to court a suitor, he couldn't be more perfect.
In fact, it is very beautiful; dressing elegantly can uplift one's spirit. She wears it with a grace that others do not possess. Perhaps it is an innate nobility; even adorned with jewels and precious stones, she remains composed and does not appear worldly. No matter how luxurious the flowing garments may be, when they are on her, it is she who wears the clothing, not the clothing that wears her
Madam Pei instructed everyone to disembark from the carriage. Upon seeing Prince Le Ling standing by the roadside, she hurriedly opened her umbrella and approached him, bowing slightly and saying, "I apologize for the inconvenience, Your Highness! This place has been like this for many years; further ahead, the carriage cannot pass, and one can only proceed on foot."
He said he was going, and no one dared to utter a word against it. When Lady Pei and the sisters-in-law came out, they were somewhat surprised to see the two of them standing by the red-painted pillars outside the main gate, both looking proud and dignified. Draped in a cloak made of leopard fur, they appeared like exquisite orchids and jade trees in the icy cold.
Madam Pei felt that it was very inappropriate for the Buddhist temple to have no restraint in speech. It was one thing for this daughter-in-law to be unable to manage the fourth son, but she also did not understand what should and should not be said. At that moment, her expression was not very pleasant; she refrained from expressing her anger only because Murong Cheng was present, and instead shot a fierce glare at Madam Xie. The other daughters-in-law noticed this, and no one dared to speak, standing with their stomachs sucked in, completely still. When Madam Pei led the way to the side hall, they finally loosened up and quickly followed her. They engaged in the ritual of offering incense, even bowing to the five hundred Arhats, and by the time the entire process was completed, it was already the hour of Shen. Madam Pei sent a servant to tidy up the carriage, and the group then majestically exited the mountain gate and boarded the carriage to return to the residence
Then the green lamp returned the courtesy without delay, "I dare not accept such honor!" I asked Lady Pei, "Is this the young lady of your household? It has been three years since we last met, and she has grown so much!"
The conversation inside was lively, while outside, elegant music began to play. Lian Sheng lifted a corner of the curtain to look outside and murmured, "The hairpin ceremony is about to begin, prepare the initial offerings!"
His Highness the King of Leiling is an esteemed guest, and Lady Pei is currently discussing ordering a meat feast from outside. However, Murong Cheng interjects, saying it is unnecessary, "I am also a guest of incense, and it would not be appropriate to break the customs."
He nodded slightly, "What about the 'Natural History'? Where are we reading it now?"
Yayoi followed her father around in circles, and out of the corner of her eye, she noticed that the teacher had not moved. She hurriedly approached, deeply bowing in her ceremonial attire, and shyly said, "Teacher, look, the student has grown up!"
Miyoi remained silent, "Aunt Biao will not come out to act as a matchmaker; if it doesn't work out, it would be a matter of losing face. Moreover, with such rumors circulating about the daughter of the Xie family, no one would dare to marry her lightly."
The guests congratulated the head of the Xie family and Mi Rong. In this era of peace across the four seas, everyone has begun to meticulously refine their rituals once again. Unlike the previous years, when changing emperors was quicker than changing clothes, who had the leisure to consider matters beyond basic sustenance and safety
The Xie family is different from others; more than half of this temple was funded by the Xie clan, giving it a somewhat familial temple nature, thus providing particularly generous treatment for the members of the Xie family. About ten monks were waiting with their palms together in the corridor behind the main hall, and a special courtyard was set aside to accommodate them. As lunchtime approached, the vegetarian dishes were nearly ready, and a group of young monks carried white wooden food boxes, one after another, from the kitchen to the courtyard.
She replied with lowered eyes: "According to the understanding of students, the end is to advocate for learning throughout one's life. If one is eager to learn, even in death, one is still as if alive. However, if one is unwilling to learn and possesses shallow understanding, then living is no different from being a walking corpse"
Miyoi Babaer looked at him and waited for a moment before saying: "Tomorrow you will come of age. I have a few words of advice for you. In the past, it was not a big deal to laugh and play with your fellow disciples, but from now on, there will be taboos. You must not share the same table for meals, sleep on the same bed, engage in conversation while avoiding eye contact, and maintain a distance of three and a half feet. These are the rules that a woman must adhere to. Do you remember them?"
Lian Sheng said beside him: "The Ninth Prince is now a coveted catch, and while one may wish to marry him, it is not necessarily required to choose from within the Xie family."
In the stillness of the moment, we waited in silence, only to hear my father’s speech: "Today is the joyous day of my youngest son. My wife and I have waited for fifteen years to see this day come to fruition. I am immensely grateful to all of you for gracing us with your presence to witness this occasion."
She hesitantly replied: "Sour nourishes the bones, pungent nourishes the tendons, salty nourishes the meridians, and ... ... " After a long while, she was unable to provide a complete answer
Minister Xie expressed his gratitude earnestly, bowing so deeply that he could not lower his hands. "Thank you, thank you for your trouble... The grand banquet in the flower hall is ready, please take your seats, esteemed guests!"
In the presence of the dim green lamp, I bow deeply. "All matters lie in the hands of the noble ones, and the origins of the noble are beyond the calculations of ordinary people. Born with a destiny of wealth and nobility, they are also revered for their character and virtue. The poor monk merely states, 'Gold and scales are not mere things of the pond.' May I ask the noble one, is what the poor monk says correct or not?"
Yuan Xiang was very pleased, "Your Highness, the King of Leiling, accompanying us, what a proud moment! What more could you ask for?"
Speaking of destiny, it is also a rather private matter, not suitable for those who are not close to hear. He quietly instructed below and slowly walked out of the courtyard
Yayoi changed into her ceremonial robe and was led out again. A mat was laid on the ground in front of her parents, and she approached to perform the grand ritual, expressing her gratitude for her parents' fifteen years of nurturing.
She shook her head and said, "No. I'm not drunk, just a bit muddled."
The second day is the official date for the hairpin ceremony. Unlike in the past dynasties, on the day of one's fifteenth birthday, the ceremony must be conducted. There is no mention of engagement or the custom of the Shangsi Festival.
"When receiving the teachings of one's elders, to avert one's gaze is a sign of contempt." He said with a serious expression, "Can you listen attentively?"
Murong Cheng quickly withdrew his gaze, yet that slender waist was etched into his heart. He lifted the hem of his robe and exited the hall, with her accompanying him, the fragrance of her skin wafting through the air, and the sound of her jingling ornaments ringing softly. It was then that he realized how tall she had grown; in another two years, she might reach his shoulders. After waiting three whole years for her to grow up, he had finally reached this moment, and an indescribable feeling arose within him.
Madam Pei handed her the hand warmer and gently stroked her face, saying, "It has been difficult for you these past two days, getting up early and your complexion does not look very good."
Lady Pei hurriedly called Mi Sheng over, "Quickly, pay your respects to the master"
Yuan Xiang was embarrassed and jumped up to chase Mei Shou, saying, "It's one thing for a lady to say that, but how dare you laugh? You are truly outrageous!"
He made a sound of acknowledgment with his sleeves rolled up, which was already quite commendable. It was cold outside, and after standing for a while, her face turned pale from the cold, and the hand holding the umbrella became crimson. He remained silent and turned back along the same path. She followed behind, stumbling and struggling, looking rather disheveled
She hesitated for a moment, fearing to provoke his anger, and hurriedly said: "Master, please do not be upset. In fact, I do not wish to listen. I cannot contain my impatience, nor do I feel happy to expend that mental effort. If one wishes to have their fortune told, the senior brother in metaphysics is extremely accurate in divination; why must one specifically go to the temple to seek it? My mother is a devout Buddhist and listens to whatever the monk says without question."
A hint of an elusive smile appeared at the corner of his mouth. "Since you are aware of your shortcomings, it indicates that you are not excessively foolish, and there is still hope. In the future, engage in self-reflection, be more observant, and remain vigilant in all matters to avoid unnecessary criticism. Once you achieve something, you can then consider finding a suitable husband to marry. Murong is the foremost family in the world; one cannot afford to take a foolish consort. If asked who your teacher is, I cannot bear to lose face over this."
"Senior brother can interpret the hexagrams, what about you?" He still spoke in the stern tone of a mentor, "What do the ninth line of the Qian hexagram and the fifth line say? And what do the sixth line of the Kun hexagram and the sixth line of the changing lines indicate?"
Madam Pei felt bewildered, as the fate of Miyoi had already been determined three years ago, and there was nothing more to be said. However, it was true that the King of Leiling spoke convincingly, with details that were quite vivid, only missing the revelation that he was of royal blood. She chuckled, "This old monk certainly has some skills, but he loves to speak in circles, leaving people at a loss."
Miyoi looked out the window as he boarded the vehicle in front, and several young sisters also successively entered their respective carriages, as the convoy began to move slowly. The snow had lessened compared to before, and the wind had also ceased. The copper bells at the eaves swayed, their crisp sounds echoing in the glassy world, becoming increasingly distant and melodious. The mountains and waters were all covered, with the roadside weeds leaning, revealing only the top half, which was withered and yellow. The wheel tracks overlapped one another, and as the carriage passed by, large patches of snow were brushed off the grass.
Madam Xie Xun said: "Those who can predict accurately are all like this; only those wandering sorcerers would casually fabricate tales. Today they gain wealth, tomorrow they attain official positions, all relying on favorable circumstances. It is said that revealing too many secrets of heaven damages the yin essence, and in the future, King Yan will account for everything in detail, leaving people tongue-tied and unable to speak. Those who have renounced the world understand this deeply, and thus are even more cautious about it."
She choked for a moment, hurriedly waving her hand, "No, it's not that. The student is afraid of not greeting the teacher properly. If something goes wrong, the student cannot bear the consequences." Suddenly recalling what happened last night, she felt a bit embarrassed. At that moment, she said no more and blushed awkwardly.
He turned his face away and said, "Let me ask you again, what are the six types of dietary therapy?"
The women listened with a sense of bewilderment, but Murong Cheng was not very convinced by that monk. The daughter of the Xie family, how could she possibly be lacking? Even if she never married, she would still be of immeasurable value. He smiled and clasped his hands together, "Master, why not take a look at my fortune as well"
She fell silent, "I want to go worship Buddha, so I asked the master for leave. Unexpectedly, the master also said he wants to go and insisted that I must take him along tomorrow." She hung her head in dejection, "In front of the master, I dare not run, nor dare I jump, for fear of being suffocated to death by the frustration."
Yayoi, with tears welling in her eyes from the pain, interjected, "What does it matter! Which woman does not marry? His Highness is a paragon of virtue, and how many young ladies are thinking of him!" She gasped, turning to the perfect woman, and said, "Just put on a show, don't take it so seriously; it really hurts a lot."
The elder sister-in-law leaned over to take a look, "I see your eyes are a bit swollen, I suppose it is because you waited outside the pear garden for too long yesterday. On such a cold day, why did you personally wait? You could have asked a young lad to keep an eye on things and just sent word to you after the banquet. I heard that His Highness got drunk yesterday, did it cause you any trouble?"
Madam Pei nodded and said, "Indeed, time flies like an arrow. Tomorrow, I will reach the age of adulthood. I am grateful for the Bodhisattva's protection; these years have been peaceful. Today, I have come to the temple to redeem my life and fulfill my vow. I would also like to trouble the master to divine for my daughter once more, to see where her marriage fate lies."
She did not take anything to heart, comforted the wet nurse, and as soon as she entered the garden, she expressed her hunger. In the kitchen, there were preparations of braised pork and stir-fried greens. Mei Shou came in carrying a food box, while serving the dishes, she said: "The clothes for tomorrow's ritual bath have arrived. The matron said we must set off at the hour of Chen, so do not read tonight and go to bed early."
Miyoi sat in front of the charcoal brazier, feeling a bit warmer before responding: "It snowed all night, and the garden has been cleared. I just passed by the Jin Well, and the snow is so thick that the path is unrecognizable. In my opinion, Master should not go; the temple is crowded and chaotic, and what if something goes wrong?"
In the Zongsheng Temple, there is a renowned master known as the Qingdeng Master, who possesses exceptional skills in bone reading and face reading. When he and his disciples entered, he had just finished attending to Madam Xie and six other ladies. With just a glance, a mysterious light appeared on his face, and he smiled, saying: "Today, the distinguished guests have all arrived, bringing great honor to this humble temple."
As for the officials and the supporters, several elder sisters from the paternal family are readily available. They are older, having undergone the rites earlier, and are well-versed in the process, becoming experts. First, they prepare her for bathing, changing her into ceremonial attire and footwear, then they guide her to the double phoenix and sunflower mirror, where a skilled matron pulls the red thread to unveil her face. Speaking of this unveiling, it is a rather painful process. The fine hairs on her face are plucked away in clumps, like autumn leaves swept away by the wind, with a sharp sound akin to tuning a stringed instrument. Speaking of this unveiling, it is a rather painful process. The fine hairs on her face are plucked away in clumps, like autumn leaves swept away by the wind, with a sharp sound akin to tuning a stringed instrument.
After all this fuss, I truly feel somewhat exhausted. Once the hour of three has passed, I will don the hairpin crown and change into the ceremonial attire. There is still a procedure to follow, called "Jiaozi." This involves pouring sacrificial wine and paying respects to the honored guests. Symbolically, taking a sip of wine and a bite of food signifies the completion of the ceremony
A hint of a smile played on his face, "You are hoping that I won't go, so that you can feel unrestrained, aren't you?"
Dao glanced at her and thought to himself, she usually appears carefree, but it turns out she is quite sensible
She was at a loss for words, as her statements were too profound, leaving her feeling extremely anxious. Marrying into the Murong family was not her desire; in fact, finding someone as indifferent to fame and fortune as her sixth brother would be quite good. Aside from the master, everyone in the Murong family harbored ambitious aspirations, and she did not believe that being with such a man would bring any happiness. Living in constant fear, it would be one thing to ascend to the Wenchang Hall, but if she were to fail, she would end up with a fate worse than death.
This question-and-answer exchange is quite amusing, yet she does not look at him directly. Although it meets his requirements, it has become unappealing at this moment. Her obedience to him is a good thing, but her inability to adapt is merely blind loyalty and filial piety. Clearly, he is not among the people she needs to avoid, yet she does not even understand this
Murong Cheng smiled gently, "Madam, you are being too polite. The Buddhist temple is a place of purity, and one should approach it with a heart full of reverence and sincerity. If one were to arrive at the door in a casual manner, it would be somewhat disrespectful."
Upon reaching the outskirts, the Zongsheng Temple is located at the western end of Yangxia, just three miles beyond the city. Due to its long history, the temple enjoys a more prosperous incense offering compared to others. During festivals and holidays, the situation becomes even more remarkable, as pilgrims from various places gather in large numbers. Even before reaching the three arch bridges, the road is already blocked by vehicles and horses, making it difficult to move an inch.
He furrowed his brows and said, "You have been at the academy for three years, yet you still do not understand Zen sayings? Is it that you are unwilling to listen or simply cannot comprehend?"
Fortunately, there were no restrictions on movement with this robe, and she ran wildly while holding up the hem of her skirt. By the time she entered the garden, the gate had already been opened. She paused to catch her breath, brushed off the snow from her body, and straightened her attire before going in to pay her respects
Miyoi rolled her eyes at what she said, "It's nothing much. Your Highness rarely gets drunk, and I don't serve this role every day. Once we return to Ye City, there will be plenty of filial scholars in the Academy. If one wishes to please, they won't even be in the right order to do so"
She is always timid in front of him, afraid of him, and does not dare to approach. He smiles helplessly, wondering if he truly frightens her. Perhaps so, but it is better to keep a distance, considering it for her own sake. If she gets too close and inadvertently loses her focus, all the efforts she has put in over the years would be in vain
They made such a commotion that they went outside. Miyoi heard the wet nurse scolding at the door of the inner room: "Stop shouting and making a scene! Hurry up and tidy up, or you won't be able to get up tomorrow!" Then, through the window, she bowed to her and said, "Miss, you should also rest, as you need to get up early tomorrow."
Lady Pei smiled and said, "It is said that the Ninth Prince is a gentleman of jade, and I see it as well. He is strict, yet he does not put on airs. It is necessary to be strict with students; jade must be carved to become a gem, especially for someone like our Xiao Ya! Your father returned to the courtyard the other day and remarked that you have grown up, knowing how to restrain yourself in front of the teacher. Initially, he was very reluctant to send you to Ye City, but now, seeing the results, he praises that this decision was indeed a good one!"
She did not dare to defend herself, bowing her body and saying: "The student was negligent, please forgive me, Master"
This serves as an opening statement. Tan Sheng is a supporter of this grand ceremony, assisting the main guest in officiating. She was the first to lift the curtain and step out, washed her hands in the bronze basin, and stood by the western steps.
She shook her head, "My mother knows my birth date and time, and I do not understand those Zen principles anyway, so let my mother handle the fortune-telling."
She summarized a rule: whatever he said, she accepted it, with a sincere attitude and complete obedience, which allowed her to avoid reprimands. She became increasingly submissive, saying, "The student is dull-witted; such matters still require the master to personally instruct. The student feels ashamed and is sorry for the master."
She stared at him blankly; if she were to decline, it would be seen as a lack of awareness of the situation. She hurriedly bowed humbly and said, "Thank you, Master."
She raised her head awkwardly and said, "Did the Master not just say ... ... "
With her high heels, it was truly not easy for her to step up due to the small hem of her flared skirt. As she wobbled unsteadily, fortunately, he was there to support her from behind. His large hand pressed against her waist, demonstrating the strength of a man, providing a steady reassurance that was inexplicably comforting. She felt a bit embarrassed and did not dare to look back, instead, she simply slipped into the carriage. It was only after she settled down that she recalled how she had failed to express her gratitude at the right moment, making it seem like an unspoken understanding between them.
The Master also wishes to see the scenery of Chenliu. "Miyoi said with a smile, bowing to Murong Cheng, "The student will escort the Master to the carriage.
The ceremony of the head gift is a significant formal event in a girl's growth. Miyoi felt somewhat nervous seeing the grand occasion. She stood up and tightened her sash, then accompanied by Fang Youxuan, she exited the east room. The Xie family had a great reputation, and the spectators filled the hall to capacity. She did not dare to raise her head, keeping her eyes lowered as she walked to the high seat, bowing respectfully to the guests in gratitude. Then, she took her place on the mat, facing west while sitting in a kneeling position, as Youxuan used a rhinoceros horn comb to style her hair. Next, her parents gave her a nickname. To be honest, the name "Xiyao" is indeed not very presentable. It is acceptable for family members to call her that in private, but if she were to use it in the future for formal occasions like marriage contracts, it would be somewhat demeaning. Before the grand ceremony, her father was still flipping through books, disapproving of this name for being awkward and that one for having an unfavorable meaning. She felt quite emotional upon hearing this, lamenting the hearts of parents everywhere. Although her father appeared stern, he actually cared for her deeply. The second addition ceremony is essentially the same as the first, except for the change in the congratulatory words. Tan Sheng presented the hairpin with both hands, and the officiant recited: "In the auspicious month and on the appointed day, we present you with this attire. We honor your dignity and commend your virtues. May you enjoy longevity for ten thousand years and receive endless blessings." After reciting, he sat down to help her change her hairpin and replace it with a new one, and once the ceremony was completed, there were more congratulations. Returning to the inner chamber, she changed into a long-sleeved deep robe.
She was filled with trepidation, wanting to argue, yet ultimately did not dare to speak. No matter what she said, he had a way to render her speechless; after all, he was the master, and she was merely a student! She hunched her body, feeling as if all her breath had escaped to her heels. Upon further reflection, it seemed that she had indeed been negligent and misunderstood the situation. With an expression of utmost sincerity, she bowed and said, "Master, I was wrong; it was my confusion. Please, Master, do not be angry."
He looked her over again and said, "I suppose you must have forgotten! It's quite a hassle for you to rush over on such a cold day; you might catch a cold." After saying this, he ordered a maid from the garden to come in, wash a warm towel, and wrap it around her head. He then walked to the eaves to take a look and murmured, "It's still snowing."
Yayoi responded and extinguished the oil lamp with a gentle breath
"I am your master, not your classmate." He raised an eyebrow high, "You did not hear my words clearly; a child who cannot be taught!"
Standing in an open field, the sound of sacred chants fills the air, and an unusual calm settles in his heart. However, in just a moment, he finds himself still sinking in the mire. He chuckles at himself, realizing that he cannot achieve a tranquil mind; after all, he is but a worldly person, seeking fame and reputation, and his desires are boundless
Master Qingdeng scrutinized Miyoi with keen eyes, "In the future, you will surely find a good match. However, to inquire now is to touch upon secrets that cannot be revealed. I reiterate the old saying, it is invaluable. Yet, the journey is fraught with dangers, and fortunes and misfortunes hinge on a single thought. But with the support of a fortunate star, one can turn calamity into good fortune.
She pondered for a moment and said: "I was just about to ask the Master, 'In the southern region of Shu, there are many mountains, and the macaques steal women.' Is this true? They take beautiful women from the main road to make them their wives, and after having children, send them back to their maternal homes to be raised. Can humans and macaques intermarry?"
Murong Cheng turned back and said, "It is still Young Master Wang who should escort the lady to the car first." He lifted the warm curtain at the car door, slightly inclined his body, and said, "Madam, please."
She appears somewhat dazed and considers herself dull-witted, having learned the Book of Changes in a completely muddled manner, feeling utterly ashamed to face her master. Her face is flushed, but the redness is not a chaotic spread. On her snow-white skin, a faint blush emerges, which does not resemble shame; rather, her complexion seems to have improved.
"Nurture your spirit with bitterness, nourish your flesh with sweetness, and maintain your orifices with smoothness." He wore an expression of disappointment, then sighed deeply: "It is my fault for not caring about you enough. You learn everything, yet you are only half-knowledgeable in each. Now that you have returned to Ye City, you will stay by my side, and in three years, you have not managed to acquire any respectable knowledge. If this gets out, it will tarnish my reputation"
If one were to say what is special about the Zongsheng Temple, it is indeed hard to discern. The same Buddhist halls and incense burners, the same sounds of wooden fish and the lingering Zen melodies. The only difference might be the statue of Shakyamuni Buddha in the main hall! Standing at three feet and eight inches tall, it is majestic in appearance and is made of brass wrapped in gold.
"Of course!" Lady Pei said, "I just don't know where my future marriage fate will lie. When I see Master Qingdeng again, I must earnestly ask him for guidance and enlightenment."
Sisters-in-law, please smile. Since the founding of our Great Ye, there has not been a woman who has entered the Imperial Academy to study. Xiaoyao can be considered the first person to break this ground. Women are no less than men, and it is something to be proud of.
The vegetarian dishes have been served, arranged neatly on the dining table in front of everyone. There is a plate of vegetarian chicken, a plate of tofu, a dish of stir-fried peppers, as well as the Buddhist delicacies of heartless soup and yellow millet rice. The taste is not particularly remarkable, rather mild, but it is not unpleasant either. After hastily consuming the meal, the ladies began to contemplate seeking the abbot for divination.
There are also established conventions in the art of inscription. Minister Xie, with his sleeves gathered, delivered this passage with great emotion: "With the rites duly prepared, on an auspicious day of the month, I hereby announce your name. The character 'Yuan' signifies great merit, and it is suitable for a young gentleman. It is appropriate for the occasion, and may you be eternally protected, with the name 'Wu Jiu' bestowed upon you." Her formal name is 'Wu Jiu', which has its origins. In the hexagram of Ding, there is a primary line that signifies 'Wu Jiu', which expresses the hope for peace and the avoidance of calamity.
"You are only admiring his good looks! I ask you, have you reached the age where you wish to find a partner?" She laughed heartily with Mei Shou, "So it seems the red star of love is stirring; no wonder you keep talking about this handsome and that cultured gentleman! Just give me a nod, and I will immediately report to your mother to find you a charming suitor, ensuring your satisfaction!"
The person who is to serve as the main guest is the esteemed matron from my father's cousin's family, who is highly respected. She embodies the virtues of the three obediences and four virtues, demonstrating perfection in every aspect. More importantly, she is a cousin of the current sage, a legitimate member of the royal family. Such a revered status can certainly attract good fortune. Inviting her to preside over the occasion will ensure that all good luck flows into her presence.
She dared not nod, only trying to please, "With three thousand disciples of the Master, to be chosen by him is a blessing I have earned over several lifetimes. However, I am dull and clumsy, afraid that I cannot comprehend the Master's painstaking efforts, thus wasting his energy in vain."
